Bare Escentuals Announce Plans to Open in Canada in 2012

I am so pleased to announce that Think Retail has been retained by San Francisco based, Bare Escentuals, as their exclusive Canadian real estate broker.

Please indulge me while I provide you with some background and story about this magnificent company:

In 1976, Bare Escentuals opened it’s first boutique in California, as a bath and body retailer.  Leslie Blodgett joined Bare Escentuals in 1994 as CEO and has been the face of the company ever since.  Leslie helped transform this local bath and body retailer into one of the leading prestige cosmetic companies in the United States with the launch of bareMinerals, an award winning line of cosmetic and skincare products.  Bare Escentuals started the idea that makeup could actually be considered skincare, and that got people talking.  What makes Bare Escentuals so special is they only use the finest quality ingredients in their products to give you everything you want without any harsh chemicals.  It’s makeup so pure you can sleep in it!

Bare Escentuals continues to grow the brand worldwide.  In March 2010, Bare Escentuals was purchased by Shisheido, the largest cosmetic company in Japan, for $1.7 billion.  Today, they are operating close to 200 company-owned boutiques in the United States.  In order to continue their international expansion plans, Bare Escentuals plans to open 3 - 5 boutique locations in Canada, focusing on Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario to start.  The boutiques range from approximately 900 - 1,200 square feet, with 20 feet of frontage.

Fossil's Sales Reach Record Levels

During a week of that was one of the most volatile in the history of Wall Street, Richardson, Texas based Fossil (FOSL) released their financial earnings for the 2nd quarter; the results were record setting and beat analyst's expectations. Here's an overview of their strong performance:

Second Quarter (2011 vs 2010)
- Net sales increased by 34.9% to Record Level of $556.7 million compared to $412.6 million;
- Gross profit rose 31.7% to $312 million, compared to $236.9 million;
- Operating income increased by 34.1% to Record Level of $86.3 million, compared to $64.3 million;
- Global comp sales increased 22%

Six Month Period Results (2011 vs 2010)
- Net sales increased by 35.7% to $1.09 billion compared to $0.81 billion;
- Gross Profit increased by 34.5% to $613.8 million, compared to $456.3 million;
- Operating Income increased by 54.7% to $178.8 million, compared to $115.6 million;

Looking forward to the 3rd and 4th quarters of 2011, Fossil expects net sales to increase in a range of 22%-24%

In regard to Canada, last month, Fossil opened their 1st store location in the nation's capital, at Ottawa's Rideau Centre, the country's #5 ranked mall in terms of sales per square foot. Furthermore, in June, Fossil opened at Carrefour Laval, the top performing mall in the province of Quebec. We expect to announce shortly Fossil's next 2011 store opening. For 2102, Fossil is prepared to open approximately 6 Canadian locations, and are targeting super-regional malls and high pedestrian street-front locations. Size required is 1500 sq.ft (with minimum of 23.5 ft storefront).

In addition to the above, Fossil is also seeking to open a couple of Fossil Outlet stores in Ontario or Quebec in 2011. Size required is 3000-6000 sq.ft.

Finally, Fossil is also now prepared to open the first Watch Station store in Canada, which specializes in the sale of all licensed brand watches (Michele, Burberry, DKNY, Armani...etc). 

Fossil operates 360 corporate stores in 15+ countries.

Hot Fudge Sweetens Up Les Rivieres

In late July, Hot Fudge opened its second store, at Les Rivieres, in Trois Rivieres, Quebec. The premises is 1350 sq.ft, and is strategically situated at the mall's 50 yard line, on the corner, looking into the food court. The space offers 2-sided exposure, with over 45 feet of total frontage. The store, which was designed by Frederic Bernier, is both innovative and fresh, and looks absolutely fantastic.

Hot Fudge specializes in the sale of men's and women's branded fashion accessories, catering to the 16-34 year old . The store carries such items as watches, sunglasses, handbags, hats, belts, costume jewellery, headphones...etc, from well known brands such as Nixon, Rayban, G-Shock, Oakley, Betsey Johnson, Michael Kors, and many others.

Hot Fudge will continue to grow and expand in 2012; plans are to open four (4) new store locations. The company will consider opportunities in super regional malls throughout the province of Quebec. Size required is 1500 sq.ft.
 
About Les Rivieres - Owned by Ivanhoe Cambridge, Les Rivieres is the largest regional mall between Montreal and Quebec City. The centre has 140 stores, with a GLA in excess of 566,000 sq.ft. Sales per square foot are approximately $415 psf (a strong performing property by Quebec standards). Annual traffic is 5 million. The mall is home to such top fashion retailers such as BCGB, Mexx, Le Chateau, La Senza, Aldo, Dynamite\Garage, Tristan, Jack & Jones...etc.

Pinkberry Celebrate Canadian Grand Opening

West Vancouver was the place to be on Thursday night, as Los Angeles based, Pinkberry, opened their 1st location in Canada, at the Village at Park Royal. Approximately 4500 people joined the festivities; a truly awesome sight for a retail opening. The line-ups began early in the afternoon and by the time the store opened at 5:30, the throngs of people extended well beyond our viewpoint. Samples were brought out to everyone in line, which teased and created anticipation. Once in the store, Pinkberry served each customer, free of charge (until store closing at 11:00 pm). Smiles and happy faces abounded, as guests ate their frozen yogurt, many of which who were trying Pinkberry for the very the 1st time. The crowd and VIP guests were also treated to a performance by LA rock group, Bonnie Dune, whose drummer is Vancouver's own, Cory Monteith, from the monster TV show Glee. A concert that took place on a stage, that was set up on the shopping centre's main road (which had been closed off to cars, earlier in the day). Much thanks go out to Maria Holly and Brian Maule, and the Larco (owners of Park Royal) team, for their great collaborative efforts, working with Pinkberry, to stage such a great party.  By the end of the night, it was clear that Canadians can't get enough Pinkberry.

I am pleased to confirm that Pinkberry is seeking to open additional locations in Vancouver. The company will consider super regional shopping centres, large format power centres, and high pedestrian street-front locations (such as Granville, Robson, and Denman). Size required is 500-1200 sq.ft. For malls, Pinkberry will consider smaller format stores and kiosk locations.

One final thank you(s) is, as well, required. About 6 years ago, while in New York to see my sister (who frequently calls and emails me suggestions of the hottest new US retailers to contact) and nieces (Kelly and Lexi), my nieces and sister introduced us to their newest passion - Pinkberry. During this trip, they took us to Pinkberry, and like those in Vancouver on Thursday night, my family loved this new non-fat frozen yougurt. Soon after this visit, I recall contacting Pinkberry, to see if they had any plans to open stores in Canada. As I am sure any one who cold calls other companies to attract and develop their business, can appreciate, relationships start with a call and an introduction. Today, I am both pleased and proud to have played a small part in this opening, and wish to very much thank my sister and my nieces for sharing their passions.

Think Retail Supports Autism Speaks

This past Father's Day, on June 21, I participated with my family, in the inaugural Walk Now for Autism Speaks event, in Montreal. Our team, Matthew's Army, was created and named in honour my 9 year old son (Matthew), who suffers from autism.

It was an emotional day for us, as we joined other families that have been affected by this syndrome. The event was hosted by Autism Speaks Canada, who are the nation's leading advocate for children with autism. Their motto is 'Autism Speaks - It's Time to Listen'. On this day, autism did indeed speak, as over 800 people turned out to participate in the walk. I want to thank Suzanne Lanthier and Autism Speaks Canada for all of their efforts that made this a very special event for those in attendance.
